For more than a year, Tanner West has tried to shake his feelings for his long time best friend, Paisley Bronson. She was the perfect girl to fit the lyrics in all his favorite songs – the girl he had always wanted. When she fell in love with another man before Tanner had the chance to tell her how he felt, he was left with no resolve to find love again. Burying himself in school and easy girls has become his new lifestyle, but when KelleeBrooks shows up at his favorite bar, he begins to think there may be another verse to his song, after all.
Kellee Brooks moved to New York City for one thing: escape. Growing up in a small town where her entire life was planned out for her, she’s desperate to break free and find herself without following the same path as her mom. Kellee thought working at the local dive bar would mean more money for school, but when she meets the smoldering, scarred honey eyes of Tanner West, she finds there’s much more hiding in the smoky building than just a few tips.
With Paisley still haunting Tanner and Kellee vowing to save anyone the trouble of loving her, will the pain and fear keep them apart – or will they find a way to rewrite their song together?
Break free with this heartbreaking story of letting go and letting love in.
Excerpt 1 –
Benny shakes his head and slams his fist down on the bar, “Sal! Can I get another whiskey for my friend here? Put it on my tab. And if you’ve got any happy pills back there, slide those in, too.” He nudges me in the ribs and I laugh, pushing him off me. Sal was already working on my drink, but at least it won’t be on my tab now.
“Alright, alright, I get it. I’ll put on my fucking happy face.”
“’Atta boy,” he laughs. “And don’t think you’re getting out of singing tonight. You haven’t sang in over a year and we’re breaking that streak tonight.”
I nod to Sal as he sets down my fresh glass, “Keep dreaming, Benny.”
“Aw, Tanner, please! I miss that dreamy voice of yours,” Charlie says, her voice low and seductive. She traces her finger along my bicep and I shake her off. She’s beautiful, in an easy target kind of way, but I’m not in the mood to put up with her shit.
“Well you’ll have to keep on missing it. I’ll drink all the whiskey you feed me, but I’m not singing.” I haven’t sang since I left Orlando that day, after calling Corbin and telling him the truth about Paisley – the real truth. I told him that she was crazy about him, that we were just friends, and that he’d be insane to let her go.
And as much as I knew it would make her happy, it still fucking killed me.
What I had told him before that was that Paisley had kissed me –that she loved me and not him and he was just another set of tags to hang on her chain.
Yeah, I know it was shitty, but I was desperate to keep her.
I didn’t know what else to do.
But, after I saw how hurt Paisley was when I told her that’s what I had said and after she walked out on me – I knew I had to make things right. I called him that morning he was supposed to get on a plane to go back to his base and laid out the truth. I even told him I was a fucking idiot who was trying to save the woman I loved for myself even if it wasn’t what she wanted. Corbin, surprisingly, understood – but in the end he got Paisley back.
And I got a broken heart.
“Why won’t you sing?” I hear a smooth, almost angelic voice coo behind me. I turn in my barstool and literally choke on my drink. Sal has moved down to the other end of the bar and standing in his place is a fucking angel. No shit, this girl is glowing. Her long, sandy blonde hair is falling all around her and her soft eyes are like two illuminated wells pulling me in deep. I can’t see what color they are, which kind of intrigues me, but what I notice most is her freckles.
Damn, I have never seen freckles that sexy before.
“Are you okay?” she asks, tucking her hair half behind her ear.Probably because I choked on my drink and still haven’t found one word to say.
I set my whiskey on the bar and turn to completely face her, “I’d be better if I knew your name.” I turn my game on and break out the half smile, the one that usually lands a girl in my bed within a few hours.
“I’ll tell you my name if you sing,” her brow arches as she grabs the white towel hanging off her shoulder and begins drying a glass. She’s dressed modestly in a pair of jeans and a bright yellow tank top, but her skin looks freshly tanned and a sliver of skin just above her hip bones makes me want to trace it with my fingers and send goose bumps down her body.
“How about you tell me your name, and if you’re lucky, I’ll sing to you later when you’re in my bed?” I know it’s a cocky line. Hell, for once I feel a little stupid saying it, but in all honesty I’m a guy, and this girl looks like the perfect distraction from Paisley. Still, I can tell this girl is different, and I somehow feel embarrassed that the words tumbled out of my mouth.
As I thought, she rolls her eyes and swings the towel back over her shoulder before leaning across the bar. “Trust me, honey. If you got me in bed, you wouldn’t be able to speak, let alone sing.”
The corners of my mouth turn up as she pushes back from the bar. Her eyes are challenging mine, and damn if I don’t like a challenge.
Excerpt 2 –
My heart feels like it’s about to beat right out of my chest. Tanner is looking at me like he’s not good enough to touch me and like he can’t keep his fucking hands off me all at the same time. I inhale deep, my breath shaky as I try to find the words to say. I want to talk about it more – about what she is to him, about when she’s coming and what I’m going to have to deal with – but right now all I can think about is how his hands feel on my waist, and how I wish he would touch every inch of my body with those hands.
“Kiss me,” I breathe.
Tanner doesn’t waste another second. His lips find mine, soft and gentle at first, but then a fire consumes us both and I’m biting his neck as he lifts me from my chair. He kisses down my collarbone and then back up to my ear, sending chills cascading down my arms and legs. I moan softly, running my fingers through his hair and tugging a little as I pull his lips back to mine. He slides his tongue between my lips and takes my mouth, deepening the kiss as his hands explore my body.
“How long until dinner?” he pants between kisses.
“Maybe twenty minutes.”
“That’ll do,” he replies, carrying me to the couch.
Tanner’s hands are hungry as he positions himself on top of me, pulling the straps of my tank top down to kiss my shoulders. He nips and sucks softly, trailing a line from my shoulders, to my neck, across my collar bone, and back again. Slowly, he kisses a little lower, sucking at the swell just above the hem of my top. I inhale sharply, my fingers gripping his hair.
“You taste so sweet,” he mumbles against my skin, lighting it on fire. He lifts my shirt and slowly kisses down my stomach, stopping just above the hem of my shorts. He blazes a trail of fire with his tongue from one hip to the other, working the buttons and zipper until he has my shorts loose enough to pull down my shaking legs and throw across the room. He smiles up at me, his sexy half grin silently killing me, and then he completely takes my breath away – because he pulls my panties off with his teeth.
With. His. Teeth.
Suddenly, my heart is beating in my throat. I’m not a virgin, but I’m definitely no where near as experienced as Tanner, no matter how cocky my façade may be. My legs are shaking uncontrollably and I feel it start to move up to my hands. Tanner stops kissing my thighs and looks up at me, concern laden on his face.
“Are you okay?” he asks, moving to position himself on top of me again. He brushes the hair from my face and pulls my shaking hand to his lips, kissing my fingers softly as he waits for me to reply.
I nod, though not confidently. “I hate admitting this to you, but I’m not that experienced.”
He smiles devilishly, his eyes lighting the fire in my stomach again. “You think I don’t know that? Why do you think I’m going so slow?”
I let out of a puff of air, “This is slow?”
His grin grows wider, “Trust me – if I had it my way, your ankles would have been on my shoulders the first night I saw you.”

Who inspired you to start writing?
My mom, definitely. She's actually very into reading like I am and is a great writer herself. I hope to one day convince her to write a novel, too. She inspired me when I was very young and encouraged me to pursue my love of writing, no matter what. Everything I've written from awful love poems in high school (yuck!) to decent pieces in college, she has always been there for me.
Great question! I have no idea. I always pictured myself writing non-fiction or nothing at all, but one of my final capstone courses in college was an advanced fiction course that really turned me on to the possibilities of creating a story. Why romance specifically? Well, we could blame it on my husband for showing me love so early in life, but it's probably more Disney's fault than anyone else's. I'm a girl, I love to love, what could be better than romance writing?
How do you write your novels?
Sporadically and without any structure at all. Sometimes I'll be driving and I'll whip out my phone and record something to write down later. Sometimes I'll write a scene and sometimes I'll just write about my character to get to know them better. Eventually, I sit down and map everything out so that I don't forget anything (blonde moments are a habit for me) and then I slowly start piecing it all together. It makes sense to me, but if I told any of my professors this they might kill me lol.
When did you know you wanted to write a novel?
Honestly, it hit me out of the blue. I got the idea for Tag Chaser when I was in the shower and I just couldn't shake it. I was dreaming about the characters, writing random scenes in my head, and just thinking about them constantly. I decided it was a sign to stop being so scared of failure and just write it. The way I see it, the worst thing that could happen is no one likes it - and in that case it will still be loved by me and that's what matters.
Why should readers pick up Tag Chaser?
Tag Chaser is a unique story that I think hasn’t been told yet. Often times we fall in love with characters who are so perfect, either individually or for each other. Tag Chaser is about exploring our imperfections and learning not to fight that chemistry that sometimes we just feel, whether it’s easy or not. I think anyone who reads Tag Chaser will laugh and love, and those are both two very beautiful things.

Kandi Steiner is a Creative Writing and Advertising/Public Relations graduate from the University of Central Florida living in Tampa with her husband. Kandi works full time as a social media specialist, but also works part time as a Zumba fitness instructor and blackjack dealer.
Kandi started writing back in the 4th grade after reading the first Harry Potter installment. In 6th grade, she wrote and edited her own newspaper and distributed to her classmates. Eventually, the principal caught on and the newspaper was quickly halted, though Kandi tried fighting for her “freedom of press.” She took particular interest in writing romance after college, as she has always been a die hard hopeless romantic (like most girls brought up on Disney movies).
When Kandi isn’t working or writing, you can find her reading books of all kinds, talking with her extremely vocal cat, and spending time with her friends and family. She enjoys beach days, movie marathons, live music, craft beer and sweet wine – not necessarily in that order.
